Ph.D. positions available

PhD position (m/f) phylo-/biogeography of mammals & community ecology of plants

For two projects funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG), the UFZ Department of Computational Landscape Ecology invites applications for

1 PhD position in the field of biogeography (m/f), code-digit 28/2011
and
1 PhD position in the field of community ecology (m/f), code-digit 29/2011

The first project seeks to analyze the climatic niche of the world’s mammals and then relate it to their phylogeny. Thereby the evolution of realized climate niches shall be reconstructed.
The second project, which is subject to final funding confirmation, will test the idea of fluctuating hydrological conditions in grasslands as a basis for plant species diversity.

The interested applicant should hold a master or diploma degree in Biology, Geoinformatics, Hydrology, Physics or related subjects with a strong leaning towards statistical computation (preferably in R). The project comprises substantial amounts of statistical analysis, and statistical and/or programming skills as well as basic knowledge of mammal/plant ecology, respectively, are a strong advantage. Working language will be English.

The positions will be available starting as soon as possible, for 36 months. The place of work is Leipzig, Germany. Salary will be according to the appropriate civil service level TVÖD 13 (50%). The successful candidate will be working in a highly interdisciplinary research environment with excellent facilities and motivated colleagues.

Women are explicitly encouraged to apply to increase their share in science and research. Physically handicapped persons will be favoured if they are equally qualified.

For further information on the project please contact Dr. Carsten Dormann, carsten.dormann@ufz.de, phone +49 341 235-1946.

Interviews will start in late February until the position is filled. Applications with a letter of motivation, curriculum vitae, last academic certificate and the contact details of 2 references should be sent as single pdf-file by email to Dr. Carsten Dormann as well as application@ufz.de. For submission of paper applications, please send complete application documents under code digit 28/2010 or 29/2011 to the personnel department, P.O. box 500136, D-04318 Leipzig, Germany. E-Mail: application@ufz.de.
