INNGE - 2nd annual election for the board

Dear International Biogeography Society,

We are excited to announce the 2nd annual election for the board of the International Network of Next-Generation Ecologists (INNGE).

The call is available via this Google form (http://goo.gl/forms/PuZqke52LC). The form must be filled before January 8th with the following information.

1.    your name
2.    your society (if applicable)
3.    your country
4.    your vision for INNGE, how would you like to see INNGE evolve over the coming years
(<200 span="" words="">
5.    how you can contribute to that vision (<100 span="" words="">
6.    your biography (one short paragraph or bullet points; may include URL link to additional info).

This information will constitute a candidature and will be included on the ballot.
The election schedule is as follows:

·        December 11th: Call for candidates
·        January 8th : Voting open
·        February 8th: Voting closed
·        February 10th: Results announcement

Professorship in Remote Sensing in Earth Surface Dynamics

The Faculty of Geosciences and Environment at the University of Lausanne invites applications for a
professorship in Remote Sensing with a particular focus upon the development of cutting-edge methods, algorithms and techniques and with application domains that relate to the research interests of the newly created Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics.

We expect the successful applicant to be expert in one or both of:
• the processing and analysis of satellite or airborne remote sensing data (multi-, hyper-spectral, radar, ultra high resolution, etc.);
• statistical image and signal processing, pattern recognition, statistical data analysis for remote sensing;

The candidate must have a sufficient background in and a strong commitment to excellence in teaching remote sensing at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.  Teaching activities will also include participating in doctoral programs and supervising Master and Ph.D. theses and the candidate should have a track record in this area.  A good command in both French and English is preferable.
 
The successful candidate is expected to have a proven capacity or potential of developing an internationally competitive research program in the field of Remote Sensing, and to interact and create synergies with researchers of the Faculty of Geosciences and Environment.

Starting date: February 1, 2015 (or to be agreed upon)

The application material should include:
• a letter explaining the reasons for applying
• a Curriculum Vitae including the date of birth and the date of thesis with its title
• a list of publications
• a statement of research and teaching goals and interest (not exceeding 3 pages)
• pdfs of the five most significant publications
• the names and contact information of five referees.

Please note that the maximum file size that can be received by the University of Lausanne e-mail system is 10 Mb. Larger files should be split accordingly and sent sequentially.

The main duties of the postholder will be to engage in research and produce high-quality publications of an international standard. The successful candidate will teach, supervise and examine undergraduate and graduate students. The post is in association with St Peter’s College Oxford.

Accepting Nominations - C. Hart Merriam Award (ASM)

The American Society of Mammalogists is now accepting nominations for the C. Hart Merriam AwardThe C. Hart Merriam Award is given to eminent scholars in recognition of outstanding research in mammalogy over a period of at least 10 years. C. Hart Merriam was the first chief of the Division of Economic Ornithology and Mammalogy of the United States Department of Agriculture, and a founding member of the American Ornithologists' Union, the National Geographic Society, and the American Society of Mammalogists. Among other contributions, he developed the concept of "life zones" to classify biomes found in North America. Nominations for the Merriam Award will be considered without regard to national citizenship or activity in the ASM.  Persons interested in nominating someone for the Merriam Award should send a single letter of nomination and a copy of the nominee’s CV via email to Felisa Smith (fasmith@unm.eduby 10 February 2014.

Alfred Russel Wallace Award - call for nominations

The Alfred Russel Wallace Award was established by the International Biogeography Society in 2004 to recognize a lifetime of outstanding contributions by an eminent scholar in any subdiscipline of biogeography.  Previous recipients have included Drs. Jack Briggs, Jared Diamond, John Avise, Bob Ricklefs and Jim Brown. 

We are now in the process of accepting nominations for the 2015 award.  Nominations should consist of a supporting cover letter of no more than 800 words, co-signed by two members of the IBS, plus an abbreviated CV of the nominee.  The selected recipient will be invited to address the society at its next biennial meeting.

Please forward nominations to Carsten Rahbek (crahbek@snm.ku.dk), chair of the Awards Committee, by February 24th, 2014.
